The review

Heroes of History sits between two familiar genres. On one side is a city that grows through ages, unlocking new architecture and production. On the other is a roster of historical heroes with distinct abilities and roles.

Battles play out on hex grids where positioning and turn order matter more than raw stats, which gives the combat far more substance than the auto-battlers this game is often compared with.

The pairing works because progress in one system feeds the other: a stronger city funds better heroes, and better heroes open harder provinces.

How it plays

  • Era-based city progression
  • Hero collection with role specialisation
  • Turn-based hex battles with terrain effects
  • Guild cooperation and events
  • Research and production chains

Strengths

  • Combat with real tactical decisions
  • Two loops that reinforce each other
  • Good balance of short and long sessions

What to expect

  • Hero micro-management piles up over time
  • Learning both systems at once takes patience
  • Event pressure can feel constant

Optional purchases

Free to play. Diamonds accelerate construction and hero acquisition. Steady play remains viable without spending.
