The review

Rise of Kingdoms distinguishes itself from other stronghold games with a continuous, zoomable map where armies march in real time rather than teleporting between targets. Ambushes and reinforcements therefore depend on actual distance.

Each civilisation brings passive advantages and a starting commander, and commander pairings become the deepest part of the game — talent trees and skill combinations matter far more than raw troop counts.

The early game is unusually generous, with plenty of exploration and PvE content before anyone needs to worry about being attacked.

How it plays

  • Seamless world map with real-time army movement
  • Civilisation selection with unique bonuses
  • Commander pairing and talent trees
  • Alliance territory, forts and resource control
  • Season-based kingdom conflicts

Strengths

  • Map movement gives battles real geography
  • Commander systems reward study
  • Substantial free early progression

What to expect

  • Late-game power gaps between spenders and others
  • Migration and season rules take effort to understand
  • Time-zone-driven events

Optional purchases

Free to play. Optional purchases cover speed-ups, commander sculptures and gems. The early and mid game are comfortable without them.
